Can you help more Ireens with mobility carts?
Mobility Worldwide MO-Columbia Update: built since 1-1-16 #1,379
Each Friday morning at 7:00 I am sitting down for breakfast and our regular meeting with my Rotary friends. Rotary is one of the great service clubs we have in the USA, and it also happens to be an excellent partner with MOBILITY WORLDWIDE. We soon learned when MW began 22 years ago that polio was a major cause of leg handicaps around the world. Polio has been, I think, the major one cause of the need for a mobility cart. So many of the messages along with the request for a PET read, “Got fever at age 3 (etc.), and could no longer walk.”
“…who told of how she had polio when she was young…” report on Ireen in Zambia
*** Rotary gave vision to the eradication of polio. The CDC, WHO, UNICEF, The Gates Foundation and national governments of the world have joined since.
*** The result has been the largest global health initiative and most successful private-public partnership in history.
*** Rotarians have contributed $1.5 billion to the effort.
*** The largest government donor is the USA, having provided nearly $3 billion.
*** The key to the eradication of polio from the world has been massive and continuing vaccinations. We are VERY close to the end of polio, but vaccinations must continue. Only a few cases of recent polio outbreaks continue in Pakistan and Afghanistan, countries where wars make vaccinations difficult. Vaccinations must continue.
*** John Wesley once said, “If your heart is as my heart, give me your hand.” Rotary International and Mobility Worldwide are good partners. Together we are making a difference.
